var intro = 'Research Structure #1 (paper and plastic structure/ shop) 1992
Western society and especially America consume and discard tons of materials
each day. The recycling industry is based on this endless supply of discarded
products. Even after years of recycling growth there are still some products that
are too costly or difficult to recycle. This structure was based on these \"difficult
to recycle materials\".
The Structure features:
Load bearing paper product walls on plastic bottle foundations.
Each bale weighs approx. 1800 lbs.
It uses approx. 80 tons of difficult to recycle materials.

Research Structure #2 (gabion baskets/ stone barn) 1998
In war and natural disaster situations emergency housing is one of the first
requirements in the lives of the survivor/ refugee population.
Gabion baskets are most often used for erosion control along rivers and streams.
The baskets can also be used in a vertical /wall structure. Because the baskets are
easy to transport and assemble they can be taken (even by mule) to the most
remote locations. The baskets can be filled with rubble from destroyed buildings
left as is or covered with an indigenous mud stucco. The baskets can be arranged
into homes or refugee barracks.
This Structure features:
Gabion baskets with stone rubble filled walls.

Research Structure #3 (plastic bales/ shed) 2005
In many developing countries (no drinking water or sanitation systems) plastic
is the product most often found littering the streets and countryside.
In these same locations, housing is often lacking. This wall system would provide
quick and inexpensive refugee or emergency housing.
This structure is created using small bales of plastic bottles. The materials are
collected locally and are made using a small baler. The bales can be moved
and stacked by hand. The bales can be finished with an indigenous mud stucco.
This Structure features:
5000 lbs. of misc. plastic bottles.
The bales were created on site.
Each bale weighs approx. 40 lbs.
';
